This is a time of tremendous momentum in cancer research. That is not least due to the rapid gains in knowledge in basic molecular research, which in turn are being translated into new therapies and diagnostics.

The link between research and care, i.e. the possibility of directly incorporating clinical experience into research – and vice versa – is crucial for medical progress.

Today, the daily routine in hospitals is so time intensive that research is hardly possible alongside patient care. That is why we create structures with our Clinician Scientists Program so that clinically active physicians can conduct research. In addition, the funding association of the Children's Cancer Center Hamburg has been funding the Juli Harnack Scholarship since 2018 to inspire young medical doctoral students to pursue pediatric cancer research and to promote translational exchange.
