Managing Director of ATH Altonaer-Technologie-Holding GmbH, Chairman of Burkhard Meyer Stiftung
"I have supported the Institute almost since its foundation. My wife's fate had prompted me to become intensively involved with the topic of cancer. What made me enthusiastic from the very beginning: the staff put their heart and soul into it! I walked around the construction site with Mrs. Barkmann and found it very important to help build up such a research institution. It was also a good fit on a personal level. We are united in the hope that we will improve the children's chances of recovery step by step and thus make a meaningful contribution to the common good.
The direct contact with the employees is what pleases me most as a donor. It is very satisfying to see what the money is used for. Today, my foundation finances doctoral positions and laboratory sponsorships. We have also established a fund to support young scientists. Supporting the next generation of researchers is important to me. Of course, I follow the path of "my" doctoral students. For example, I was present when Lena Harder defended her dissertation at the university. It was nice to see her being congratulated afterwards by friends and parents – and also that she had passed with distinction."
