Our goal is to understand cancer. Stagnant healing rates, serious acute side effects and long-term complications caused by empiric treatment methods force us to rethink. The path to a specifically targeted therapy strategy can only be found by understanding the molecular mechanisms.
Our strategy consists of a combination of exploratory and hypothesis-supported research approaches. We study signals of cell death and growth and their processing, focusing on model systems of normal cellular development and important malignant childhood illnesses. In the post genomic era we have learned not to restrict our view solely on single genes or factors along a defined path of reactions, but to comprehend a larger connection of functions.
Throughout our research we continuously keep our young patiens in mind. The Research Institute Kinderkrebs-Zentrum Hamburg has been created to build a bridge between clinic and innovative research beyond traditional scientific borders in order to create the therapies of tomorrow.
